Which Fall SAT Date Should Your Student Take? A Simple Guide for Parents

Last week a mom called me half in a panic. The fall 2026 SAT dates

College Board has five weekend SAT dates left in 2026: August 22, September 12, October 3, November 7, and December 5. The regular registration deadline for September 12 is August 28, October 3 closes September 18, November 7 closes October 23, and December 5 closes November 20. If you miss a regular deadline you can usually still register late for an extra fee, but I would rather you never pay it. The moment you pick a date, put the deadline in your phone that same day.

How to choose the right one

If you have a senior, work backward from your earliest college deadline. A lot of early action and early decision applications are due November 1, which means October 3 is often the last score that lands in time, and a September 12 sitting gives you a cushion to retake. If you have a junior, you have more room to breathe. A fall date this year plus a spring date next year lets you superscore, where colleges take your best section scores across different sittings. Almost nobody hits their peak on the first try, and that is completely normal. The date matters less than the runway before it

Here is the part families miss. Two students can register for the very same October date and walk out with wildly different scores, and the difference is almost never the date. The real digital SAT runs about two hours and fourteen minutes, so we build the stamina to sit and focus longer than test day will ever ask. Pick a date that gives your child at least six to eight honest weeks of preparation, not three frantic ones.
