Should Your Student Retake the SAT This Fall? A Simple Way to Decide

A quick note for parents whose child is applying to college this year.
The August scores are in, and a lot of families are staring at a number they are not sure what to do with.
Retake, or move on?
Here is the honest answer I give every parent who asks me. A retake is worth it when three things are true, and it is a waste of a good fall when they are not.
When a fall retake makes sense
1. Your child's score is close to the range their target schools want, and a focused push could move them into it. Even 40 or 50 points can change which scholarships open up.
2. The August result did not reflect their practice. Nerves, a rough morning, a section that fell apart. That is a fixable problem, not a ceiling.
3. There is real time to prepare. Not the calendar weeks. The actual hours your child can give between now and test day.
When it is time to stop
1. The score already clears the bar for every school on the list. Chasing a few more points can cost your child sleep they need for essays and applications.
2. There is no plan, only pressure. A retake with the same prep that got the same result will get the same result.
The fall dates that still matter
There are three SAT dates left this fall.
1. October 3, with registration closing September 18.
2. November 7, with registration closing October 23.
3. December 5, with registration closing November 20.
Work backward from your child's application deadlines. If a school's deadline is November 1, the October date is the last real shot, and December only helps for schools reading later.
Before you decide anything
Do not guess. Look at the score report and find the exact skills that cost the points. That is the whole game. A retake without that map is just hope.
