The PSAT Is Weeks Away. Here Is How Your Student Walks In Ready.

A parent messaged me last week, half laughing. Her words were, Lucy, my daughter just found out the PSAT is in two weeks and she has not looked at a single practice question. I hear some version of that every single October. The PSAT sneaks up on families because the school schedules it, not you, and one ordinary Tuesday it is suddenly on the calendar. Here is the good news. Two weeks is plenty of time to walk in calm and ready, as long as you spend it on the right things.

Know what the October PSAT actually is

The PSAT/NMSQT runs inside a window this October, and each school picks its own day inside that window. So the very first move is simple. Have your student find out their exact test date from the school test coordinator. For juniors, this is the year the PSAT counts toward National Merit recognition, which can open real scholarship doors. For sophomores, it is a low stakes dress rehearsal that shows where your student stands with a full year left to act on it. Either way, the score is information, and information this early is a gift.

Spend your two weeks on the right three things

You cannot cram an entire test into two weeks, and the good part is you do not need to. Put your energy here.

1. Take one full, timed practice test in Bluebook, the same digital app used on the real day, so nothing about the screen feels new when it counts.

2. Review every question your student missed and sort them into two piles, content they never learned and careless slips they already knew. Most students are shocked by how tall that second pile is.

3. Practice reading on the screen. Paul, who teaches the math side, says half the points students leave behind come from rushing the first module, not from hard math. Slow down at the start.

Build the stamina before the test does it for you

Here is the part most families skip. The PSAT is long, and focus fades long before knowledge does. We build our own sessions to run three hours, two hours of math and then one hour of reading and writing, on purpose, so a student is used to working past the point where the brain wants to quit. You can do a smaller version at home. Have your student sit for one uninterrupted practice section with the phone in another room. Do that two or three times before the test and the real thing feels shorter than they feared.

What you can do as the parent

You do not need to know the content to be useful. When the score report arrives, print it and read it together without reacting to the number first. Ask one question. Which section surprised you? That answer tells you more than the total ever will. And if the score comes back lower than everyone hoped, remember it showed up early on purpose. Early is exactly when a score is worth the most.

Frequently asked questions

Does the PSAT go on college applications?

No. Colleges never see the PSAT. For juniors it feeds National Merit, and for everyone it is a practice run for the SAT. That is exactly why it is the safest place in the whole process to make mistakes.

How much should my student study for the PSAT?

A focused couple of weeks is enough. One full practice test, a careful review of the misses, and a little stamina work will do far more than months of scattered flashcards.

When will we get the scores back?

It depends on when your school submits its answers, so scores land a few weeks after test day. Your school test coordinator can give you the exact date for your building.

If you want to know where your student really stands before that October date, we start every family the same way, with a free proctored mock test and a plan built around what that mock shows. We are based in New Jersey and we work with families all across the country, one on one and fully online. I am Lucy, a mom who went through this journey and a tutor who does this every week. If this was helpful, send it to another SAT family who forgot the PSAT was this soon.
