National Merit Semifinalists Were Just Announced. Here Is What It Means For Your Family.

My phone buzzed with three messages in one morning last week, all from parents I know through Sefia Tutors. Their kids had just found out they made National Merit Semifinalist. One mom sent me a screenshot of the school email before she even finished reading it herself. That kind of news travels fast, and every September I watch it ripple through the families we work with, some celebrating, some wondering why their child came so close and did not quite make it. So let me walk you through what this announcement actually means, because there is a lot of confusion out there and most of it is unnecessary.

What Just Happened With National Merit

Every September, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation releases the list of Semifinalists based on a score called the Selection Index, which comes from the PSAT your child took as a junior last October. Roughly 17,000 students nationwide earned Semifinalist status this year out of about 1.4 million juniors who sat for that test. The cutoff score is different in every state, and this year almost every state came in a little lower than last year. None of that is something a family controls after the fact. It was decided back in October when the test was actually taken.

If Your Child Made Semifinalist

First, take the win. This is a real accomplishment and it belongs to your child. Semifinalist status is not automatic entry into Finalist though. Your child will need to complete a Finalist application through their school counselor, and the SAT score they eventually submit has to confirm the PSAT performance. Keep that in mind if a retake is on the calendar this fall or spring. We tell our families the same thing every year. Do not let the Semifinalist excitement change the plan. Keep building the actual SAT score, because that is what colleges and scholarship committees look at closely.

If Your Child Did Not Make The Cut

If this was not your child's year, please hear me on this. Semifinalist status went to less than one percent of the graduating class nationally. It is a narrow band at the very top, and missing it says nothing about whether your child gets into a great school or earns real scholarship money. Paul and I have talked to hundreds of families over the years, and the students who work hardest between now and their SAT date are the ones who end up with the strongest options in the spring, regardless of what happened on one PSAT morning.

The Next PSAT Is Already Coming

Here is the part most families miss. The PSAT for the current group of juniors lands sometime in October, and each school picks its own date inside that window, so it can sneak up faster than you expect. If you have a child heading into that test, now is the moment to build real stamina and real strategy, not scramble the week before. Our sessions run three hours, two hours of math with Paul and one hour of English with me, because the actual SAT runs about two hours and fourteen minutes and stamina is half the battle. We also draw on Leticia's own Harvard admissions file when we talk with students about how testing fits into the bigger picture, because a score is only ever part of the story.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is A Good PSAT Selection Index Score?

It depends on the year and the state, since National Merit cutoffs move every year and vary widely by state. A strong Selection Index generally sits in the high 200s out of 228, but the real target is simple. Aim for your child's personal best, because that number also predicts SAT performance.

Does National Merit Affect College Admissions Decisions?

It can help at some schools, especially ones that offer their own National Merit scholarships, but it is not a requirement for a strong college outcome. Plenty of students with excellent options never earned Semifinalist status.

When Do Semifinalists Find Out If They Became Finalists?

Finalist notifications typically come the following February, after the application and the confirming SAT score are reviewed. Your child's counselor will have the specific deadline for the Finalist application, usually due in the fall.

Whichever category your family falls into this September, the work ahead is the same. Build the score, build the stamina, and keep the whole child in view, not just one test result. If you want a clear read on where your child stands right now, we offer a free proctored mock SAT and a personalized plan to go with it. No pressure, just a real look at the numbers. Send us a message if you would like to grab a spot.
