How to Fill Out the Common App (What Harvard Actually Tells Applicants)

💡 The Common App is not the place to sound impressive at the expense of being accurate. The strongest application tells the student’s real story clearly, completely, and honestly.
Start with the facts before you polish the language
Before writing clever descriptions, make sure dates, schools, courses, honors, activities, roles, and hours are correct. Colleges can have different supplemental questions and instructions, so read each school’s requirements instead of assuming the Common App is identical everywhere.
Activities and Experiences should show what the student actually did
The section now called Activities and Experiences is broader than clubs and school organizations. A job, internship, meaningful family responsibility, community involvement, serious hobby, research role, or sustained responsibility outside school can belong there when it is genuinely part of the student’s story.
For the 2026–2027 cycle, the Position/Leadership field is optional. If a student began entering activities before the August update, review each entry and make sure the role is still being reported where appropriate. And remember: leadership does not have to mean President. Cashier, Research Assistant, Tutor, Team Member, and Violinist are all real positions when those are the roles the student actually held.
Do not manufacture a title that never existed
A clear, specific description of real responsibility is stronger than a fancy title nobody used. We are telling the student’s story, not decorating it. Use the limited space to show action, contribution, commitment, growth, or responsibility.
One final check before submitting
Open every section again. Check Activities and Experiences entry by entry, confirm fee-waiver information if applicable, and review the requirements for each college. The seven main Common App essay prompts did not change for 2026–2027, so students who already began the personal statement do not need to start over simply because the new cycle opened.
